STAGE 01 // FAIL-CLOSED
Cryptographically Signed Catalog
The entire tool catalog (catalog.json) and stack definitions are signed with an ECDSA P-256 private key at release time.
At runtime, remote catalog feeds are verified against a public key pinned inside the application binary. Tampered, unparseable, or expired feeds are rejected immediately, and the app automatically falls back to the embedded catalog compiled into the binary.
STAGE 02 // TRANSPORT
Strict HTTPS-Only Enforcement
Plain-text HTTP artifact URLs are blocked outright and recorded in the audit log.
Downloads connect exclusively to verified, official vendor endpoints (GitHub Releases, Amazon S3, Azure CDN, HashiCorp Releases). No intermediate proxy mirrors or re-hosting caches are ever used.
STAGE 03 // INTEGRITY
SHA-256 Cryptographic Checksums
Every download is written to a temporary <filename>.partial file and hashed as bytes arrive.
Only when the computed SHA-256 hash matches the signed catalog digest is the file promoted to its final name. Any digest mismatch deletes the payload immediately to prevent compromised or corrupted file execution.
STAGE 04 // SIGNATURE
Win32 Authenticode Verification
Native Win32 WinVerifyTrust evaluates digital signatures on downloaded .exe and .msi installers before they can run.
Configure your organization's policy in Settings → Security:
• Warn before launch (Default): Confirm prompt before running unsigned installers.
• Block unsigned installers: Refuse to run unsigned installers entirely in UI, batch mode, and CLI.
STAGE 05 // DEFENDER INTEGRATION
Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW) Tagging
Every completed download is stamped with the Windows Zone.Identifier NTFS alternate data stream (ZoneId=3).
This guarantees Windows SmartScreen and Microsoft Defender evaluate the downloaded file exactly like a browser download. The app never blinds or bypasses native operating system protections.
STAGE 06 // AUDIT TRAIL
On-Disk Daily Security Audit Log
Every download attempt, signature verdict, policy block, install, and uninstall event is recorded in a local timestamped log.
Stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\DevOpsToolsInstaller\logs\activity-YYYYMMDD.log. The audit log never leaves your computer, providing a local compliance trail for security audits and post-incident investigation.
